Rum and Orange Cranberry Sauce

INGREDIENTS
  • 300 g fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon organic orange zest
  • 60 ml freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon rum (or rum extract for a non-alcoholic version)
  • 80 ml maple syrup
PREPARATION METHOD

You can use either fresh or frozen cranberries for this recipe. Frozen berries are harvested at peak ripeness and maintain their nutrients when properly stored and used.

First, preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F). Prepare an ovenproof glass or ceramic baking dish. Place the frozen cranberries directly into the dish without thawing them beforehand.

Next, add the rum and freshly squeezed orange juice over the cranberries. Also include the finely grated zest from an untreated organic orange for added flavor.

Be sure the orange peel comes from a pesticide-free fruit to avoid any health risks. Organic oranges are always the safest option for zesting.

Pour in the maple syrup as a natural sweetener. Alternatively, you may use date syrup or agave syrup. Mix everything thoroughly to blend the flavors.

Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake until the mixture starts to bubble slightly. This step helps soften the cranberries and develop rich flavor.

Once it starts to bubble, turn off the oven and let the mixture cool naturally at room temperature. This helps the flavors meld beautifully together.

When the mixture is completely cooled, mash the fruit with a fork for a chunky texture. For a smoother result, blend the mixture into a fine sauce.

This cranberry sauce can be served over pancakes, oatmeal porridge, chia pudding, and many other breakfast or dessert dishes to enhance both flavor and color.
